Can I be your best friend?

When I die, I want to be cremated and have my ashes turned into a honking huge diamond:
A LifeGem is a certified, high quality diamond created from the carbon of your loved one as a memorial to their unique and wonderful life.
Sign me up! Well, not quite yet. But eventually, in a hundred years or so, don’t be surprised if you see a big orange rock flashing on the finger of one of my grandkids. My remains will pay for their college!

Unfortunately, by then you would only be of sentimental value. 😉 See, according to DeBeers, the only diamonds that “count” and are therefore valuable are the ones that come out of the ground (and that conveniently mostly belong to them), even though artificial gem-quality stones, which are becoming easier to make, are identical. Eventually, the consuming public will figure this out, but once they do, the price of diamonds will go through the floor: carbon isn’t exactly a rare element.
