Le freak, so chic!

I’ve got a friend in NYC who is gradually making her way into opera. I sent her to the Met’s new production of Salome. When she got back we chatted, and she decided she liked it, except Jokanaan’s music. She said he sounded like “a Jesus freak”.
Which is logical enough, I realize now, because it could be persuasively argued that John the Baptist was, indeed, the world’s first “Jesus freak”.

I’m reminded of the Prince Regent asking Blackadder for a Christmas story: “as long as it’s not the one about that chap who gets born on Christmas Day, shoots his mouth over everything under the Sun, and then comes a rum-cove nailed to a tree in Johnny Arab-land.”
