Where do you fit in?

May God strike me down, but I’m linking to Tim Lambert, who is running an interesting poll of where bloggers fit on the Libertarian purity test. Turns out, me & Jonah Goldberg are next door neighbors with “41”, along with Ace, Eric Erickson, Marie Carnes, Richard Brookhiser, and Waddling Thunder.
On the political compass: Economic Left/Right: 4.50 (pretty far right); Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 1.44 (a little more authoritarian than libertarian).
Im a little more right wing than Gerhard Schroeder, a bit more libertarian than George Bush, about 3/4ths of the way down the straight line between Maggie Thatcher and Milton Friedman. Of note, and making me wonder about the validity of the test, I share this quadrant with George Bush, Maggie Thatcher and Adolph Hitler.
Anyhow, by all means, drop into Lambert’s, take the tests, see how you fit into the Great Chain of Blogging.

People are still taking the Political Compass seriously? Its most basic flaw is that it regards the spectrum between socialism and free markets to be irrelevant to the spectrum between authoritarianism and liberty. There is no such thing as a libertarian socialist.

Well, I’d argue that there can be, but they are like rare elements, only existing briefly.
I’m convinced that the basis of a very free society is virtuous men. If men were angels, etc.
Once the virtuous – the restrained, self-disciplined, well-ordered have built a very free society, there is a lot of room and free time for people to advocate any whacked out position they care to advocate.
At present in the U.S., we have a welfare state, with strong left-libertarian tendencies. The state manages every area of your life – except that which can be managed by morals or traditional notions of virtue. Hence we wind up with an incredibly statist Democratic Party, many of whose members are in favor of legalizing drugs, gay bathhouses, giving away government condoms to kids as young as 8, filth on television, and so forth.
I can think of no other way to categorize them but as left-libertarians, such is their fusion of state regulation of half of life’s pursuit, and dissolute recklessness in the other half of life’s pursuits. Of course, as any conservative or educated libertarian can tell you, the dissolution will in then end inevitably lead the dissolute on a road to serfdom. As the dissolution creates more and more problems, the sphere reserved to private choice is encroached upon by increasing government intervention. Eventually, not only do we not have good responsive government, but we can’t get good sex or good drugs either. And our libertarian socialists – those whose bad habits haven’t done them in yet – are slowly ground into extinction.
So I think that there can be such a thing aas libertarian socialists. They just aren’t philosophically coherent (except as an expression of pure Id); and they just aren’t viable in the long run as a sustainable governing philosophy. So I think that’s where the compass goes wrong – it posits political philosophies like high atomic number elements that may exist briefly in the lab, but which can’t really make it in the real world. Not under the conditions we find on earth, anyhow.
