“Game Over”

After what might have been the greatest season ever by a closer, Eric Gagne won the 2003 NL Cy Young Award easily today with 28 out of 32 first place votes.
There are good arguments to be made that it is very difficult–if not impossible–for any closer who pitches only 70 to 90 innings to be as valuable as a starting pitcher who throws 200 to 250 innings and has league leading numbers elsewhere. However, if this season didn’t merit recognizing that Gagne was the best pitcher in the NL in 2003, I can’t imagine one that could.
